OxyContin Detox
Incorrect Assumptions about OxyContin Detox
Let's face down a few of the myths surrounding detox from OxyContin. First of all, although OxyContin is much stronger than Percocet and potentially as addictive as illicit opioids (like heroin), OxyContin comes in regular doses so exacting treatment program options abound. In other words, the myth that OxyContin detox is unsafe, regardless of methodology, has largely been put to bed.
Many people also consider OxyContin addiction a disease. While it's true that the drug does create changes to the brain and alters behavioral cycles and internal reward systems, leading scientists dispute the notion that OxyContin addiction is a disease. As a result, the scientists argue, detox needs to focus not simply on getting addicts "clean," but also on dealing with trouble spots that can be encouraging them to continue on a cycle of use and abuse. In other words, OxyContin addiction is often just a minor piece of a much larger and more complicated psychological and physical puzzle.
Myth number three is that OxyContin detoxification has to hurt in order to work. Addicts have been punished enough -- by their addiction and by the emotional consequences of that addiction. Getting clean from OxyContin need not involve undue drug withdrawal symptoms, feelings of anguish and isolation, and physical pain. Through buprenorphine protocols, for instance, addicts can taper off OxyContin in a controlled environment and regain life control.
Finally, there is the myth that OxyContin is a drug that just won't quit. True, cravings based on neural chemistry may persist for months -- or even years. However, management of these cravings is possible. Patients must learn trigger issues and often complete long and evolved therapy sessions to dispatch their addictions. However, there are ample case studies within the literature that show that even "hard core" cases of OxyContin abuse can be overcome post detox.
